AFTER THE BREAK (2025)
After the Break is an exhibition by Arrernte artist Georgia Anne at Honey Bones Gallery on Wurundjeri Country in Naarm. Drawing from critical theory, the show reflects on what happens in the aftermath of “the break”—the dismantling of oppressive systems—and imagines the process of rebuilding and healing in their wake.
Created during a summer residency at Honey Bones, the works began as a commentary on political structures but evolved into a deeply personal exploration of trauma and self-healing. Through ceramics and weaving, the exhibition considers how healing requires softer, cultural practices that stand in opposition to the rigid systems that limit growth.
Central to the show is a large woven pot in the midst of collapse, spilling onto the ground. Ceramic vessels, their forms interrupted midway, are completed with raffia using Aboriginal basket-weaving techniques—a merging of hardness and softness that symbolizes repair. Other works, inspired by seeds collected across the country, echo the Australian landscape’s reliance on fire as a force of destruction and renewal, reflecting the cycles of breaking and growth.
After the Break asks how we might rebuild ourselves and our connections—personally, culturally, and collectively—after the structures holding us back begin to fall.
