PROPPA DESERT MOB (2023)

PROPPA DESERT MOB (2023) satirically critiques the commodification of Aboriginal identity in the art market. This installation includes an unstretched painting and a photograph of the artist holding the work alongside a foam-padded information piece, mirroring the “certificate of authenticity” and artist photo often demanded by buyers of Aboriginal art from the Central Desert. This piece calls out the industry’s insistence on “authenticity,” where collectors require proof that the artist is “Aboriginal enough” to justify the purchase. Unlike any other group of artists, Aboriginal creators are expected to pose with their work to satisfy a notion of cultural authenticity, reducing identity to a commodity to be bought and sold.
